The Best Bird Food for Robins, Blackbirds & Sparrows (UK Guide)

  June 01, 2026

Robins, blackbirds and sparrows are among the most well-loved birds in British gardens. They’re familiar, full of character, and often seen close to people - especially robins, which can become surprisingly bold. Although they all visit gardens, they don’t all feed in the same way, and knowing what each bird prefers can help you attract more of them and support them all year round.

Robins are insect lovers by nature. They enjoy searching lawns and borders for worms and grubs, and they’re often quick to investigate if you’ve been digging in the garden. To encourage robins to visit regularly, mealworms are one of the best foods you can offer. They provide protein and mimic what robins naturally eat. Robins also enjoy softer foods, and they often prefer feeding from a bird table or ground feeder rather than hanging feeders. Sunflower hearts can also attract robins, particularly in colder months or when natural insect food is harder to find, but mealworms are usually the quickest way to win them over.

Blackbirds are another ground-feeding bird, and they’re especially common in gardens during summer. Like robins, they naturally eat insects, worms and berries, but they will happily take supplementary food when it’s available. Mealworms are excellent for blackbirds, particularly during dry weather when lawns harden and worms become harder to reach. Blackbirds also benefit from high-energy foods like suet products, such as fat balls or suet blocks, which can give them extra fuel during breeding season, moulting, or cold spells. If you’re feeding blackbirds, it’s worth placing food on a bird table or in a ground tray, as they tend to avoid hanging feeders.

Sparrows, on the other hand, are often most comfortable feeding in flocks and prefer seed-based foods. House sparrows are common in towns and villages across the UK, and they are regular visitors to gardens with good feeding stations. A quality mixed seed blend can attract sparrows, but sunflower hearts are often even more popular because they are high in energy and easy to eat. Sparrows are confident feeder users and tend to use hanging feeders more than robins or blackbirds, so offering sunflower hearts in a feeder can quickly increase the number of sparrows visiting your garden. They also enjoy suet in winter and can be frequent visitors to fat ball feeders.

If you want to attract all three birds, the best approach is to offer food in a couple of different ways. Hanging feeders suit sparrows and finches, while ground feeding trays and bird tables work better for robins and blackbirds. Fresh water is also important, especially in summer. A clean bird bath can attract all three species and often becomes a daily stop for drinking and bathing.

By offering the right foods - sunflower hearts for sparrows, mealworms for robins and blackbirds, and occasional suet for extra energy - you can make your garden a reliable place for these favourite birds. Not only will you see more of them, but you’ll also be supporting their health throughout the year, particularly when food is scarce or the weather is challenging.
